UTILITY PROFILES & RATE COMPARISONS

Electric

Indiana Michigan Power (AEP) and the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) are two private, investor-owned utilities that provide electric power transmission to and within St. Joseph County, Indiana.

Indiana Michigan Power (AEP), a multinational company, is the United States’ largest electricity generator. Indiana Michigan Power owns and operates more than 42,000 megawatts of generating capacity throughout the U.S. and select international markets. Indiana Michigan Power is also one of the largest electric utilities in the U.S. with almost five million customers linked to their 38,000 miles of transmission lines. Indiana Michigan Power’s service territory covers 11 states, stretching from Virginia to Texas. St. Joseph County, Indiana is served by multiple 765 Kv and 345 Kv transmission loads, making it one of the strongest transmission grids in the Midwest. The Cook Nuclear Plant, a major generating source only 25 miles away, is powered by two units which are able to produce 1,000 megawatts each.

Northern Indiana Public Service Company's power plants in northwestern Indiana provide electric power to a large area encompassing portions of the northern third of the state. NIPSCO’s transmission and distribution system accommodates large and highly varying loads. NIPSCO provides power to the state (and the country's) center for steel production in Northwest Indiana, and Indiana Michigan Power has similar experience with heavy industrial and manufacturing customers in the upper Midwest. Thus, St. Joseph County, Indiana is particularly well placed considering the two major utility companies have the capabilities and experience in dealing with load management for heavy industrial users.

The following table provides comparisons of typical electric bills for Midwest metropolitan areas. The average electric bill comparison does not take into account the many variations available in the electric service tariffs. Each commercial and industrial electric service installation should be evaluated using the actual parameters for the site. An accurate electric utility bill comparison can only be completed when load factor, delivery voltage, power factor and time-of-use are taken into account. Project Future is prepared to assist in securing this information.
